The minute Aria opened the door she saw that things had gotten a lot worse. The rain was falling almost horizontally as the wind screamed and blew. “The river’s almost to the steps now,” she cried as she ducked her head against the fury of the storm.
“Oh, this is terrible!” Clairee shouted. “How could the water rise so much in such a short time?”
“I don’t know. Let’s get out of here while we can.”
Struggling against the stinging rain, almost deafened by the whine of the wind, they laboriously picked their way across Aria’s yard. By the time they reached Pigeon Creek where they’d left their car, rain streamed in rivulets from their hair and clothes. The water from Pigeon Creek was running a lot faster now.
“Can we cross?” her mother hollered. Aria saw her shiver. Was she scared or just cold? She was cold herself. It was summer time, but the rain was cold.
“We have to get across, Mama. I don’t think it’s safe to stay here. I’ll go first.
